Japan – Australia University Staff Training Program 2020 held to promote interaction between Japanese and Australian university staff (October 19, November 4, 11, 18)
On November 4, 11 and 18, the Japan Association of National Universities hosted Japan – Australia University Staff Training Program 2020 jointly with Universities Australia to promote interaction between Japanese and Australian university staff.
Since it seemed to be difficult to hold a conventional on-site training program in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we looked for other ways and decided to implement this training program in an online workshop format. A total of 18 staff from 14 Japanese national universities participated in this program to discuss with the Australian participants what online education should look like during the COVID-19 pandemic and some other issues.
On October 19, we held a preparatory workshop for Japanese program participants. This workshop included lectures on Australian affairs and higher education in Australia given by Mr. Takahashi Ichiro, counsellor in charge of education, sports and science and technology at the Embassy of Japan in Australia and Professor Sugimoto Kazuhiro, Institute for Excellence in Higher Education, Tohoku University. This preparatory workshop helped deepen their understanding of the purpose of the training program.
On each day of the training program in November, participants from Japan and Australia presented specific efforts being made at their universities under each day's theme listed below. After their presentations, they were separated into small groups to discuss their efforts, problems and future prospects in connection with each theme. With each day of the program, participants from the two countries were seen to be more actively involved in the discussions.
Despite the restrictions on international travel due to the global spread of COVID-19, the Japan Association of National Universities will further promote international exchange by providing Japanese universities with opportunities to share information and strengthen cooperation with overseas universities.
Day One's Theme: Promoting your university as an attractive destination (魅力ある選択肢としての大学プロモーション)
Day Two's Theme: Transition to online education during COVID-19 pandemic (コロナ禍におけるオンライン教育への移行)
Day Three's Theme: The future of international cooperation in universities (大学における国際協力の未来像)
