UK-Japan University Dialogue 2019 (June 12 -14)

The Japan Association of National Universities (JANU) held the “UK-Japan University Dialogue 2019” in cooperation with Universities UK from June 12 to 14, 2019 in the UK.

Held in succession to the Japan-UK Round-table held in October last year in Tokyo involving university officials including presidents, this program aimed to promote further cooperation in the higher education field in the UK and Japan. For this program, we dispatched a delegation comprising nine Japanese university officials, mainly vice presidents. They exchanged their views at a round-table with British higher education officials and at meetings with administrative and faculty members of various universities in the UK.

This program was held as part of the Japan-UK Season of Culture unfolded in the UK in 2019 and 2020, when Japan hosts two sporting landmarks: the Rugby World Cup and the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The round-table, which was conducted on the first day of the program with the cooperation of the Japanese Embassy in the UK and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) London Office, gathered about 50 people including the program participants from Japan and the UK. Opinions were exchanged in three main sessions on the themes of institutional governance for universities, the research landscape in universities, and student mobility. Each session opened with a presentation from each Japanese and British university, and lively discussions were held which deepened the understanding of initiatives in the respective countries and universities. In addition, Japanese and British funding agencies provided presentations respectively, provoking a wide exchange of opinions.

After the round-table, a reception was held at the Embassy of Japan in the UK. Commencing with an address by Koji Tsuruoka, the Japanese Ambassador to the UK, the reception provided an opportunity for Japanese and British university officials to foster closer relationships in a friendly atmosphere.

On the second and third day of the program, the Japanese delegation visited the University of Manchester on June 13, and King’s College London and the University of Greenwich on June 14. During their visit, they received explanations from representatives at each university and exchanged opinions. On June 13, after the meeting with representatives of the University of Manchester, a networking event and workshop were held attended by officials responsible for international exchange from the universities located near the University of Manchester. In these events, various views were exchanged on themes such as the challenges faced in promoting exchanges with overseas universities.

We expect international exchange between Japan and the UK to become even more active in the future, and, as JANU, we will work with university associations in the UK to promote efforts toward expansion of exchanges between both parties.
